When Your Kid Sees You
Peruvian Folk Art
We were wandering around a thrift store in my hometown over the Christmas break when Elliott came up to me with a big grin on his face and said, “I found something you’ll like”. I was so curious what it could be. He brought me around the corner and showed me this really great Peruvian textile art. It was indeed exactly the sort of thing that makes my heart sing. It’s a little hand sewn shop scene with tiny shoppers and shop keepers. The art made me really happy and it made me feel really happy to feel known by Elliott.
Here’s a picture of the art. I think they’re called an Arpilleras. They are made in Peru and Chile. I’ve come across them in thrift stores before and now sort of regret not buying them. This one was $10 and it’s about 10”x10”.
Here’s the one Elliott found for me.
Look at this detail of the lady putting the fruit in her bag. She is perfect. And the little detailed pastries!!
This potato person reminds me of a trip I took to Peru in 2008ish, the polaroid is one I took at a market on that trip to Arequipa. The artist nailed it didn’t they?!

I went down a rabbit hole searching the internet for more examples and there are so many treasures. Here are a few of my favorites.
First up, this circus scene $60 on Etsy
Love a rad over the top beach scene $186.91 from Etsy
Those swimmers! lol. I love it all.
Another little shop scene $65 Ebay
Love the car in this wedding scene $100 Ebay
I am amazed by the detail and care that went into these. They are just treasures.
Hope you’re having a good week!

These are so cool!! I've never seen them before and can't image them just being in a regular thrift store. And even cooler that Elliott knows what you like.
