The Making of a Poster
My friend Abbey reached out a while back with the sweetest commission. She has a beautiful voice and sang in an a cappella group in college, so I sort of lost my mind when she said she sings a lullaby version of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun to her three little girls each night and wanted the lyrics on a poster. I wanted to ask for payment in the form of an audio clip so that I could fall asleep to her singing me the Cindy Lauper hit. All that to say this little commission really delightful.
I started out with these images in my brain, vintage Japanese fireworks packaging and the iconic Alexander Girard sun prints.
I got to work sketching little girls and sunshine and silly things and sent these to Abbey.
She said she liked the direction of the second poster with the Suns as the focus. So I got to work finessing that idea and came up with these two options.
She picked this last sun bursty option and I am totally obsessed with it. I’m so happy with how it turned out. I feel like I can see the inspiration images and it very much still feels like it’s own new thing which makes me very happy. I hope it looks great in her girl’s room.
Now on to things worth sharing:
I’ve been eating this super lazy salad on repeat. You’ve probably seen something similar on your instagram feed. Basically you steam some pork dumplings from the freezer section of your grocery store and then combine it with an Asian bagged salad situation. That’s it. That’s your recipe. I usually add some of trader joe’s soyaki sauce to it too. It’s A+.
Have you seen the 90’s old navy capsule, or been told that Vera Bradley bags are back? Lol. Have fun kids, I will not be participating in this. But I’ll probably be on the lookout for a rugby shirt at the thrift. And this millennial is fun to watch make fun of the gen Z.
I love Mary O’malley’s art.
I always look to Austin Kleon to figure out what to watch for movie night with kids.
Ina Garten’s memoir just dropped. I’m number 64 on the library waitlist, but I’m so excited to read it. I still have a few Ina Garten bootleg shirts if you would like to celebrate her!
I think that’s it for today. Thanks for being here.
